Tutu, Desmond

Tutu, Desmond
(b. 1931)
   Archbishop and Rebel.
   Tutu was born in South Africa. He studied in England and was ordained into the Anglican ministry. On his return to Africa, he was appointed Secretary-General of the South African Churches and in 1984 he was the first black to be elected Bishop of Johannesburg. For many years he was a major annoyance to the white apartheid government, which he did not hesitate to condemn as ‘evil, immoral and therefore unChristian’. He has been relentless in his championship of human dignity and he is a determined proponent of liberation theology. In 1984 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his defence of human rights and he subsequently was consecrated as Archbishop of Cape Town. Several collections of his speeches and sermons have been published, including
   The Rainbow People of God. S. du Boulay, Tutu, Voice of the Voiceless (1988);
   P. Walshe, Church versus State in South Africa (1983);
   J. Webster, Crying in the Wilderness (1982).
